Week 3 - Saturday - Boa
[Whatever ends up going down after the trial, Mitsuru isn't around to see it. Instead, he simply heads back, glancing between lodge and cabin and eventually settling on cabin.
He's not feeling particularly social at the moment. But there's a few people in the camp who could probably get him talking...]

But after all of that mess is settled, he heads away from the campfire immediately because someone was acting really weird earlier and he wants to know what that is about.
Have a knock on Cabin 2's door. ]

The door swings open by itself. Mitsuru himself is leaned against his bunk, not actually in it. Arms crossed, staff still in hand, the usual.]
No one else got themselves killed, did they?
[That would be the icing on the cake, truly.]

They didn't, but not for lack of trying. Ichigo tried to attack Red and Ren started trying to burn down the time-out shack.
[ He doesn't sound very impressed with them. ]

[...Mainly because of Ichigo. If Ichigo died, he'd really lose it right now, and he's already tense with the weight on his shoulders that seems to be growing by the day.]

...Our first day here. Red told me no god or goddess could reach my soul while in this camp.
[This trial... the thoughts it brought with it were nothing good.]

One from Vision. One from the real world.
[And that's what's been quietly destroying him the most, since he's gotten here.]
Every hundred years, two travelers are allowed into Vision instead of the usual one. Whoever reaches the tower last is chosen for the barrier.
[It's been three weeks. This whole thing is supposed to last for eight.
What even will he be returning to? He's not even sure, and the more he's forced to think on it, the worse it gets. Wataru was behind him, still looking for his fourth gemstone, but--
How much time would it take...? Stuck in a completely different world, Mitsuru can't be sure, and his dread only increases as more and more time passes.]

[ Mitsuru was going to reach the tower first if events progressed as normal. Boa doesn't need to ask about the other traveler to be sure of this. His faith in the other boy is complete on this level.
But with this much of a time difference... Even the most incompetent opponent could get an edge in. ]
... if... if we find a way back, and the goddess really can't touch you here, then... someone should check where the other traveler is before you go back to Vision.
[ Just... to make sure. ]

[Maybe they'll solve everything and he'll be grabbed - it's a possibility.
He releases a shaking breath.]
I was so close.
[If that stupid emperor hadn't kept that stupid gem hidden away so deeply, he could have ascended the tower by now, and...
And maybe he wouldn't have had the powers to defend himself in this place. But he'd have his wish, and that was worth his life.]

[ Boa talks fast, kind of trying to convince himself of how viable this is as an option. ]
Letting you go back just to become a sacrifice elsewhere after all of this is just... It doesn't make any sense. We can't do that.

Coming here... Might have made that all futile, in the end.
[Even now, he's fighting to return, but - is there really a point? Even if he survives, will he be able to get that wish he's so desperate to claim, or will it only be so he can watch one hundred years slowly pass him by in solitude...?]
...We'll see. Depending on what powers are available in the other worlds, maybe, or if we can harness that power ourselves...
[He's trying not to give in. Trying not to feel defeated. But it's hard, when his power and control is so limited, when there's so much completely out of his hands, so many forces pushing him into the role of a pawn that he can't quite fend off alone.]

[ Boa sounds aggravated and angry, but of course it's not at Mitsuru. His hands form fists at his sides and his voice is louder than he means for it to be before he finds his internal volume control again. ]
There's just no way we'll let it end like this... You're the strongest person here, you can't go back to that! You won't! I refuse to watch that happen!

He never expects help. That was simply the way of things; after the deaths of his parents, there was never any help, only the passing faces of those who decided they were unable to care for him, one after another. He'd realized only too quickly that the only help he could expect was from himself, and all else was something to be appreciated, but never relied on.
His appreciation for Boa in this moment is strong, and it shows in a wan smile as he turns to look at the other boy properly.]
You're full of surprises.
[He thought he'd had a pretty good read on Boa, too.]
...Thank you. Whether or not we find a way...
[He can appreciate the effort, at least. His grip loosens, still tense, but slightly less so than before.]
...It'll be something else to keep looking into. I can't very well return either way if I die, after all.
[This is as much energy he has to put into being positive right now.

Mitsuru is strong. Strength succeeds.
That's all there is. That's all there should be. ]

[ Though his voice is wavering there is a lot of certainty in it. ]

There's all kinds of things that can lead to death. Even if we play every card correctly, a bout of bad luck and it could all be over.
[His father was in wait to kill him. If the neighbors hadn't noticed, he wouldn't be here right now.]
...Best to minimize as much of that as possible.

[ Though the majority of Boa's definition of strength is physical power (or magic in this case), being smart and resilient definitely plays into it. Especially here where no rules are clear cut and they don't know what waits for them the next day.
Boa breathes out slowly and forces himself to relax a little. It's hard. Maybe the day is taking more toll on him than he though it would.]
I feel like if we worry too much about bad luck we're already losing.
[ It doesn't make sense, not really. But anything that even resembles the acceptance of defeat scares Boa.]

[Life or death really could hinge on the smallest of coincidences. He knows that all too well.]
...Still, even if it's important, luck isn't as reliable as strength. Have both, and you're even likelier to succeed is all.

[ Boa sinks his head onto his knees as these sobering thoughts sink in.]
It just sucks to think part of this is out of our hands.

[Sacrifices and all. From the start, he hadn't really meant to get Wataru killed - it was the opposite, actually. But...]
Well. Either we survive, or we don't. Anything we can do to work towards success is better than giving up.

[ There's a pause here. Mitsuru believes in luck, which puts a certain conversation from the week in perspective.]
... You know... [ deep breath] When the lake cat almost got me it wasn't bad luck. I was stupid.

It's... really dumb. [ pause. ] Not 'moose in the park' levels of dumb, at least.
[ More pause. ]
But getting meat to distract a carnivore is only good when you're not the person actively holding the meat. [ He just... thinks his face further into his knees now. ] If I'd died, I would have deserved that. I'm sorry for not telling you earlier.
[ You wasted your relief a little, huh? ]

[Boa is a trusted ally, and one of the very few. He knows that even if something were to happen, he'd need to press on solo, but...
He wouldn't enjoy having to do so, that's for certain.]

[ Boa smiles a little as well, hearing this. He had thought before that surviving alone was his top priority, but after concern about Eddie almost caused his death...
All talk of luck be damned, there is simply nothing more motivating than thinking of standing victorious together at the end, as if it's an inevitability that they just need to work hard towards. ]
